New Intel SSD with more than 32GB of Storage also Smaller than the Size of a Thumbnail

[ad#add-top-in]
Intel and Micron Technology on introduced a high-density chip that the companies say can pack 32 GB of storage on a smaller footprint than other similar devices.

The companies claim their latest product can drive capacities beyond 256 GB in a standard 1.8-inch form factor for solid-state drives. Intel and Micron also plan to introduce lower-density products by the end of the year.
Intel SSD
The NAND device is aimed at solid-state drives, which are increasingly being offered at a premium in notebooks to deliver faster boot times and more durability and reliability than traditional hard disk drives. In building the chip, used a 34-nanometer manufacturing process that increases the density of the device in order to cram more memory in a smaller space. “This new 32-GB device provides the best bit storage density available in the industry.

The new devices are smaller than the size of a thumbnail but can store more than 2,000 digital photos or up to 1,000 songs. The chips are also available in a two eight-die stacked package to deliver 64 GB of storage.

The companies expect to ship samples of the latest chip to customers in June. Volume production is expected in the second half this year.

While solid-state drives have a number of advantages over hard disk drives. SSDs use up less battery power than HDDs, the biggest disadvantage is price.

Yahoo announced BrowserPlus while Google de-branded Gears!!

Yahoo

Yahoo announced software called BrowserPlus that has a similar philosophy. Expand what’s possible to make Web applications a better alternative to programs running natively on a personal computer. Right now, it’s available only in a “sneak peek” on some Yahoo-operated Web sites.

But a year after the Google launched its Gears project, Google appears to be trying to make it easier for competitors to embrace Gears. At its Google I/O conference here Wednesday, Google de-branded Gears today, taking its name off the project and announcing some new Web browser support in the works.

“BrowserPlus is a technology designed to extend the Web, so that developers can build more exciting Web applications and so end users can get more done inside their Web browsers,” Yahoo said on a BrowserPlus frequently-asked-questions page.

Different Web sites can use BrowserPlus to support things like drag and drop from the desktop, easier file uploads, more efficient and secure acquisition of feeds and information, and native desktop notifications.

BrowserPlus works on Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 machines and on Windows XP and Vista machines. Supported browsers are Internet Explorer 7 or later, Apple Safari 3 or later, and Firefox 2 or later.

New Google Earth API and Browser plug-in unveiled

Google API

Google has unveiled the New Google Earth API and browser plug-in, allowing web developers to embed Google Earth inside any web page with a few lines of code, while the JavaScript API can be used to to enable Earth-based web applications.

Users are interested in seeing the world’s information in a geographic context, which has lead to the rise of the Geoweb, a collection of user-generated content associated with a given location. The Google Maps API, with over 150,000 developer sites, and the Google Earth client, with over 400 million downloads, are both successful tools to help users visualize this Geoweb of content.

View the thousands of existing 3D buildings, or add their own 3D models and also switch to Google Sky mode for high-res imagery of stars, planets, and galaxies. As the latest member of their Maps API family, the Google Earth API allows web developers to turn their web pages into 3D map applications. They can now use the Earth as their canvas, leveraging the same technologies used in the desktop Google Earth client.

Apple is not the first to consider solar power For Mobile Devices

Apple

Apple is reportedly looking into solar panels as a power source for mobile devices. A recently published patent application discovered by the Apple enthusiast site MacRumors.com describes a technique in which solar panels would be built behind a portable device’s LCD screen. From that location, the panels could absorb ambient light that passes through.

The technique would eliminate the need for Apple to redesign its iPods and laptops to make room for the new technology. Among the problems with using solar panels on devices are durability and the need to take up valuable space on the compact devices.

Apple isn’t the first to consider this technique for using solar power. Motorola describes a similar approach in a 2001 patent.

un-patched Flaw lies in the Adobe Flash Player 9 browser plugin

Flv-9

An un-patched flaw in Adobe Systems Flash Player 9 software; is being exploited by online criminals, Symantec reported on Monday.

Flaw lies in the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player browser plugin, which is widely used by Internet surfers to view animated Web pages. The flaw affects both the recently released Flash Player version 9.0.124 .0 and version 9.0.115.0, according to an advisory posted Monday to Symantec’s Security Focus Web site.

The flaw lets attackers run unauthorized software on the PC, and if the attack fails for some reason it will likely crash the browser, Security Focus said. Symantec is not aware of any vendor-supplied patches for the flaw, the advisory states.

In January, Adobe and other Web-development-tool vendors had to fix bugs in their development tools that created buggy Shockwave Flash (.swf) files that could be exploited in a cross-site scripting attack. This attack can be used by phishers, but it also gives the bad guys a nearly undetectable route into a victim’s bank account or almost any type of Web service.

Adobe last month patched seven bugs in Flash Player, including the one that allowed hacker Shane Macaulay to win a laptop and US$5,000 for hacking into a Windows Vista machine in a March contest at the CanSecWest security conference.

Microsoft adding multi touch Interface to Windows 7

Wim7

Microsoft plans to add multi-touch interface to Windows 7. Ballmer says it will come in late 2009. Julie Larson-Green demos the Multi-touch technology, painting with several fingers at the same time to show how it can process not just touch, but multiple simultaneous input.

“It’s much faster to do certain tasks than using a mouse,” Like rotating photos by pinching and rotating, much like Microsoft’s surface or Apple’s iPhone.

Microsoft had previously hinted that the touch gestures would find their way into Windows. In an interesting twist though, the new technology will work with existing touch screens, Microsoft said. They showed it running on an existing Dell laptop.
