Android SDK Available for Download

Android

Google’s Android platform is something we’ve been looking forward to for some time now. Initially the Google phone seemed as if it was going to be this year’s iPhone and steal the limelight from anything that came into its path. Eventually it wasn’t the device itself that everyone was talking about, but the OS the device would run on – Android.

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware, and key applications. It will allow developers to create various apps for the same platform using the Android Software Development Kit (SDK). Dalvik, which is customized software, has been specifically designed to run on top of a Linux kernel, and this is what’s being used to run the Java programming.

But enough about the details that you’re already undoubtedly aware of. For more in-depth information you can check out the official website and even download the Android SDK if you’re so inclined.

Developers, start programming!

Readius’ 5-inch screen folds out when you want to read e-mail or news

fold  fold

A Dutch company has squeezed a display the size of two business cards into a cellphone no bigger than other mobile phones — by making a screen that folds up when not in use.

The 5-inch display of Polymer Vision’s Readius is the world’s first that folds out when the user wants to read news, blogs or e-mail and folds back together so that the device can fit into a pocket.

Polymer Vision, spun off from electronics-maker Philips, whetted the appetite of gadget fans more than two years ago when it showed off a prototype. Now, Readius is in production and will go head-to-head with Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone and Amazon’s (AMZN) e-book reader, Kindle, when it hits stores in mid-2008.

“You get the large display of e-reading, the super battery life of e-reading, and the high-end connectivity … and the form factor and weight of a mobile phone,” said Karl McGoldrick, chief executive of Polymer Vision. Philips still has a 25% stake in the venture-capital-funded firm.

“We are taking e-reading and bringing it to the mobile phone,” he said.

McGoldrick would not say how much the Readius would cost, but said it will be comparable to a high-end cellphone.

McGoldrick said his “dream device,” which the company planned to build within five years, is a cellphone with an 8-inch color display that could show video.

Like Amazon’s Kindle, the Readius has a so-called electronic paper screen, which displays black-and-white text and images that look almost as if they’ve been printed on paper.

The device — which will also just make phone calls — connects to the Internet using the third-generation cellphone networks with high data speeds.

The company said it is talking to retailers as well as cellphone carriers to sell Readius.

Like Apple’s iPhone, the Readius offers the chance for cellphone carriers to boost data usage, which is more profitable than voice calls.

People will be able to set up their e-mail accounts, news sources, podcasts, audio books and blog feeds at home on their computers, and the data are then pushed to the Readius whenever it is updated.

McGoldrick said the company opted to use this approach — which rules out quickly browsing the Web on the go — because it is simpler in a mobile environment.

“I see these devices with 50 buttons on them. We have eight,” he said, adding that the company plans to add a keypad to future models.

Skyfire Releases Cool PC-Like Mobile Browser

skyfire

Skyfire has released its cool Windows mobile browser that can display Web sites built using any Web technology, aiming to deliver both the speed and media-rich experience similar to the PC browser.

According to the company, Skyfire’s browser serves up Web pages created using dynamic Flash video, QuickTime, advanced Ajax, and JavaScript on mobile devices, so users can interact with the pages the same way they would on a desktop PC.

What you can do with Skyfire’s mobile browser:

* Watch any video on sites including Youtube, Dailymotion, Break.
* Listen to any music on sites including Last.fm, Rhapsody, Yahoo! Music.
* Stay connected with friends on social networks including Facebook, MySpace and Friendster.
* Browse whatever you want like weather, news, maps, sports and all the rest.

“For too long consumers have been promised the ‘real Web’ on their phone, only to be disappointed by slow rendering, error messages, no Flash support, watered down WAP pages or second-rate mobile versions of their favorite site. Skyfire has remedied those ills at a speed not seen before on the mobile platform,” said Nitin Bhandari, CEO of Skyfire.

Samsung Launches Two Fashion Phones

Samsung-1Samsung L310

Ladies, look out. Samsung has just launched two new fashion phones targeted at the girl-on-the-go who wants to look good with her gadgets. Yes, the L310 and L320 clamshell phones sure seem like fashion statements for the fashion conscious woman.
Samsung-2 Samsung L320

The L310 clamshell, available in black and gold, is a tri-band handset with a 1.8 inch TFT display that has resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. What makes it so feminine (aside form the fact that it simply looks like something a girl would buy), are the applications that Samsung has thoughtfully incorporated into the device – including apps that assist in shopping and counting calories. It’s a very compact handset (with dimensions of 93.4 x 44 x 17.9 mm) and is equipped with Bluetooth and USB 2.0. It has a 2 megapixel camera and microSD card slot, and supports GPRS and EDGE for internet connectivity.

Samsung’s second fashion phone is the L320, also a clamshell. But unlike the square-edged L310, the L320 has a curvier look. It has an external OLED display and a 1.9 inch internal TFT LCD with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. Features include Bluetooth and USB connectivity as well as GPRS and EDGE for net connectivity. It comes with a microSD slot for external memory and a 2 megapixel camera.

Both phones will be out in February – but only in select markets. The L310 is priced approximately Rs 13,846 (€240) and the L320 will cost around Rs 12,695 (€220). There’s no official word yet whether they’ll hit the stores here. Stay Tuned.

New Cyber-shot Mobile with GPS

Gps-mob

We’ve heard rumors (and seen some live images on a China-based website) that hint at a new Sony Ericsson handset, presumably a Cyber-shot K-Series mobile. From the images it would seem this will have a 3 megapixel auto-focus camera with a dual-LED flash – if it were indeed the prototype for a SE Cyber-shot mobile, that is.

According to some of the rumors doing the rounds, this handset should also have an integrated GPS receiver. There’s no word, obviously, on a release date or pricing, nor too much dope on the actual specs. Of course, the rumors need to be confirmed as well.

Samsung launches G600 Pink

pink

The Samsung G600 has been available for almost a year now with the Samsung G600 Silver edition added to the range last summer, the final addition to the range is the new Samsung G600 Pink – a ladies version of the 5.0 mega pixel camera phone.
This new Pink G600 holds exactly the same specifications and features as the other two models but now comes wrapped in a bright pink casing that looks great with the silver / chrome carcass.
The all star Samsung SGH-G600 slider has it all, a sexy design, cool high quality features and easy to migrate menu structure with an updated and highly developed user interface. Equipped and ready to go with its 5 mega pixel camera, the Pink Samsung G600 is reportedly said to be the slimmest slider of its type measuring 14.9mm in depth.

Sporting a 2.2 inch QVGA display screen for easier text ready and web browsing, the Samsung G600 Pink offers Bluetooth Wireless with Stereo A2DP support, GPRS and EDGE, Music Player with support for MP3/AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ audio file formats, Stereo FM Radio with RDS, TV Out port, USB Connectivity, expandable memory and built-in hands free.

Along with the camera filming 30fps, you’ve got accompanying features such as a built-in flash as well as an image stabelser and auto focus for unsteady hands, all helping to create the perfect image, aside of which there is also the ability to record short video clips.

Other features worth a mention are Bluetooth printing, on board organizer and email access. With only a handful of phones of this caliber available on the market, the Samsung G600 may not have much competition from other mobile phones at the moment but sets high standards for those to follow.

The new Pink edition will tempt many gadget loving women looking for a 5.0 megapixel camera phone, the first of its kind but surely not the last?

Sony Ericsson R300i and R306i Radio phones

r360 r300i

Sony Ericsson has announced the launch of two new mobile phones, the R300i Radio and R306i Radio, both designed to deliver a “credible” radio-listening experience.

Both of these new phones are designed to have a “clear radio look-and-feel” and both offer integrated speakers – stereo in the case of the R306i Radio. Preset buttons on the front let you change stations and offer one click volume control.

The radio function can be set as your alarm clock and you can record direct from broadcasts, in addition recorded song clips can be used as ringtones.

“TrackID” comes as standard on both models. This feature, found on other higher-end SE offerings, lets you record a clip of a song from an external source, then find out within seconds who sang it, the name of the track and which album it is from.

Both phones feature Bluetooth, the R300i Radio has a VGA camera while the R306i Radio has a 1.3 megapixel camera.

The R300i Radio, complete with stereo headphones, will launch in two colours: Antique Copper and Steel Black. It will be available in selected (read: mostly emerging) markets from Q2 2008.

The R306i Radio will launch in two colours: Coffee Black and Champagne White. It will be available in selected markets from Q3 2008.

Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism launches

Nokia 7900

Nokia has unveiled its latest addition to the “Prism” collection, the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism, aimed squarely (or should that be triangularly?) at the design-conscious.

The company says that with its seamless diamond-cut design with a crystal centre key, the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism continues to highlight the geometric shapes and personalised style of the Prism offerings.

The creative designer Frederique Daubal is responsible for the laser-etched graphic designs as well as some “distinctive” wallpapers and exclusive accessories to the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism.

“Intriguing” light effects, including the option to chose from one of 49 colours for the light in the keymat as well as the graphic design on the back cover, apparently make each handset unique and “complement the glamorous appeal”.

The 3G Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism features an OLED display, a 2-megapixel camera, 1GB of internal memory and a music player with matching headset.

The Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism will be available through the Nokia online shop from mid-Feb

6x Optical Zoom With Your iPhone !!

6x_iphone

The iPhone may stand out in many ways, but not when you come to its simple 2 megapixel camera. But it seem there may be a way to up that with the Conice 6×18 Zoom Attachment.

The device comes with a lens that appears to be as large as the iPhone itself. It comes with a plastic casing with a slot for the lens attachment. What it does (besides weigh down your iPhone considerably by another 4.69 ounces) is provide the camera with 6x optical zoom for those distant shots.

It’s available though DealExtreme and is priced around Rs 580 ($15) but I’m not sure if you’ll be able to get them.

iPhone v1.1.3 Hacked

Iphone

The latest craze with iPhone lovers is the v1.1.3 update that’s making techies’ brain cells pop with the kind of features it’s brought to the device. Of course, hackers would no doubt make it their life’s ambition to crack this version too… and what do you know, they have!

Hackers such as Jonathan Zdziarski (who brought the NES emulator to the iPhone) managed to jailbreak the iPhone without having to mess around with the hardware. Before Zdziarski came along, there was a hack that unfortunately required hardware manipulation.

If you’re an iPhone noob, ‘Jailbreaking’ involves cracking the iPhone so that it will allows users to install third party applications that are not official. It allows full read/write access to the file system of the iPhone, which opens it up to manipulation for various purposes (and not just running third party apps).

You can take a look at the hacking via the YouTube video these guys have so graciously put up. Most of the other iPhone sites seem to have lost the video altogether.
