Yahoo announced BrowserPlus while Google de-branded Gears!!

Yahoo

Yahoo announced software called BrowserPlus that has a similar philosophy. Expand what’s possible to make Web applications a better alternative to programs running natively on a personal computer. Right now, it’s available only in a “sneak peek” on some Yahoo-operated Web sites.

But a year after the Google launched its Gears project, Google appears to be trying to make it easier for competitors to embrace Gears. At its Google I/O conference here Wednesday, Google de-branded Gears today, taking its name off the project and announcing some new Web browser support in the works.

“BrowserPlus is a technology designed to extend the Web, so that developers can build more exciting Web applications and so end users can get more done inside their Web browsers,” Yahoo said on a BrowserPlus frequently-asked-questions page.

Different Web sites can use BrowserPlus to support things like drag and drop from the desktop, easier file uploads, more efficient and secure acquisition of feeds and information, and native desktop notifications.

BrowserPlus works on Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 machines and on Windows XP and Vista machines. Supported browsers are Internet Explorer 7 or later, Apple Safari 3 or later, and Firefox 2 or later.

“It’s much faster to do certain tasks than using a mouse,” Like rotating photos by pinching and rotating, much like Microsoft’s surface or Apple’s iPhone.

Microsoft had previously hinted that the touch gestures would find their way into Windows. In an interesting twist though, the new technology will work with existing touch screens, Microsoft said. They showed it running on an existing Dell laptop.

Microsoft Live Mesh Launch on April 24

Live Mesh

Earlier this year at Mix 08, Microsoft Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie vaguely referred to the Mesh concept as a way to use the Web through Microsoft products to connect devices, entertainment, businesses and development.

Now Microsoft plans to launch its Live Mesh offering next week at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco but so far is not revealing details of the service.

On Friday night, Microsoft sent out e-mail invitations to a “Mesh it up” event on April 24 featuring demos by Microsoft “experts.” The invitation includes a reference to the mesh.com Web site, which currently requires visitors to sign in with a Windows Live ID and then displays an error message.

Patches for Critical Bugs in Windows ActiveX System Released

Microsoft

Microsoft issued a critical patch for two vulnerabilities in the core graphics subsystem of Windows. One of eight fixes released Tuesday as part of its monthly security updates.

Microsoft released a total of five critical patches in its April security bulletin. Two of them fix bugs in Windows, two fix bugs in Windows and Internet Explorer (IE), and one fixes a vulnerability in Microsoft Office. The critical rating means an attacker could potentially exploit the flaws to hack into a victim’s computer.
The other patches fix vulnerabilities in Windows and Office and were rated “important.” Microsoft releases patches on the second Tuesday of every month, which has become known in the industry as “Patch Tuesday.”

* MS08-018, fixes for vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office

* MS08-021 fixes two vulnerabilities in Windows’ graphics device interface (GDI)

* MS08-022 patches vulnerability in VBScript and JScript scripting engines

* MS08-024 patches a vulnerability found in all versions of IE

* MS08-023 fixes an ActiveX vulnerability that affects both Windows and Internet Explorer.

In Sarwate’s opinion, MS08-021, MS08-022 and MS08-023 are especially important for users because they affect all versions of Windows, even if no other software is installed on the machine.
